Congratulations to Dr. Josh Sousa on the successful defense of his dissertation, From Doing to Becoming: A Journey into Christlike Formation, a version of which will be coming to a bookstore near you soon!
Imagine for a moment the extent to which you would be prepared to forgive your children. Are there any lengths to which you would not go to see them made whole? What could they do that would justify casting them out from your love?

Having no natural children of my own I am forced to use my nieces and nephews as my closest context for this. There is NOTHING for which I would not forgive them. And, recognizing that in Greek the forgiveness of sin means to cast away or remove from someone that which wounds them and others, there is no action on their part needed to prompt me to intervene.

Would it be nice if forgiveness were freely sought? Sure.

Will I delay my intervention until such time as that occurs? NO.

God cannot be less merciful than we are. And if indeed he is, then he is not worthy of our worship.

“There are very few questions upon which it really matters if we are right or wrong. What matters much more, almost all the time, is to be able to enter into meaningful and serious dialogue with those who disagree with us. Being in the world in a new way means caring about communication, becoming sen-sitive, open and concerned enough both to speak and listen in healing ways. I am not talking about clever gimmicks or agreeing with everything everybody says. I am rather affirming that what really counts in most conversations is not what is said, but it is the engagement of two parties, both of whom are struggling for their identity. What matters is that I speak enough to share myself, that 1 listen enough to receive the other person in his fullness, that we commune enough that both of us can be changed.

“I think this has great bearing upon the Church, torn as it is by all kinds of diabolic controversy. I think the issues are important and I think some things are not negotiable, and so do you, and sometimes we may not agree on what they are. But surely the Church is torn over the conservative/liberal, secular/ spiritual splits not because we are pressing toward the truth, but because the persons engaged in the dialogue have an inordinate need to be right, even if it means to destroy persons of other opinions.

“And the same applies to our feeling of the great social issues of the day. We dont really understand the persons on the other side of the ideological fence.

“But the Gospel is not the formulation of an ideology, whether theological, economical, or political. It is rather a power that gets behind all our ideolo-gies. It is a mood which exposes all our need for agreement and all our drive toward victories.

“Society needs persons and communities that can be there in a new way.

“Men of great faith are the ones who can bring it off.”

And what—or who—does He sustain? ALL THINGS!

“Long ago God spoke to our ancestors in many and various ways by the prophets, but in these last days he has spoken to us by a Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, through whom he also created the worlds. He is the reflection of God’s glory and the exact imprint of God’s very being, and HE SUSTAINS ALL THINGS by his powerful word.”
