If Jesus says something demanding, unsettling, or hard to reconcile with a favored doctrinal scheme, the saying is sometimes reduced to a preliminary stage of revelation, as though it belongs to an earlier, less mature phase of God’s plan. “But that move is too easy. It assumes the gospels preserve a merely earlier version of Christianity, when in fact they were written by the Church’s mature, post-resurrection memory of Jesus. The evangelists are not presenting a Jesus whose words must be filtered through Paul to be understandable; they are presenting the same Lord whose life, death, and resurrection Paul and the Church already confessed. “So ‘pre-cross’ cannot mean theologically irrelevant, pre-grace, or not for the Church.” Latest FREE Substack is out! “The danger, of course, is that we tent-dwellers start building fortresses inside the tent. Once a particular accent on grace becomes our badge of belonging, the body of Christ’s conversation about grace fragments into mutually suspicious camps…. A grace teacher, in the healthiest sense, is someone who can recognize family resemblance across these different dialects without demanding uniformity of vocabulary or emphasis. Roy Wooten

Professor

Roy Wooten is one of the “real life” football players from the era that the movie Friday Night Lights was based upon, but he is best known for helping thousands of people improve their relationships through humorous, transformational and inspirational retreats, seminars and workshops. He and his wife, Devra are co-authors of “The Secret to Lifetime Love”, “Life Together Forever Marriage Enrichment Curriculum”, and many others. He is also the author of, “Full Throttle Into Fatherhood” for young and expectant fathers.

He has presented on platforms such as the National Head Start Conferences, National Association of Marriage and Relationship Educators, Texas Association of Marriage and Family Therapist, Christian Association for Psychological Studies International, and many more. He is a media guest on the subject of relationships and consults with businesses, chambers, schools, churches and nonprofits to strengthen relationships for success. He and his wife have facilitated more than 175 couples weekends and retreats.
He is the creator of the marriage-saving Life Together Forever Marriage Intensive which has a success rate of 90%. He and Devra have facilitated over 250 intensives in their NW Houston Life Together Forever offices.
He earned his B.S. & M.S. from Abilene Christian University and has carried licenses from Texas Department of Children and Family Services and Texas Board of Examiners of Psychologists. He has over 25 years experience keeping families together and serves as the President of Shield Bearer Counseling Centers (ShieldBearer.org) and a Leader and Author in the mens transformational ministry, The Crucible Project (TheCrucibleProject.org).
Roy and Devra live, worship and minister in NW Houston near their two adult Aggie children and son-in-law.
