Father John Behr writes that rather than viewing the Incarnation as an event confined to the distant past, we should see it “as a possibility that is to be lived as an ever-contemporary reality, here and now in those who respond to him.” The good news of the gospel is that the Incarnation is not merely something Christ did then, but that in Christ, God has entered our humanity and, in Christ, our humanity has been brought into the life of God. The One who took our humanity upon himself continues to make his life known in us: “Christ in you, the hope of glory.” — Colossians 1:27 (RSV) The risen Christ is therefore not distant from us; by the Holy Spirit, the Son makes his home in us and draws us into his own relationship with the Father, so that what Christ has accomplished for us becomes the very life in which we participate: “For through him we both have access in one Spirit to the Father.” — Ephesians 2:18 (RSV) The gospel, then, is not simply that Christ came, but that Christ has come, Christ is with us, and Christ lives in us—and by the Spirit, we are continually being drawn into the communion of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. The Trinity is not simply something we believe about God, rather, it tells us something profoundly beautiful about who God is. There is something almost offensive about how good the gospel actually is. As Jason Clark has said, when we begin to see the goodness of God for what it truly is, we discover that it is far greater than the life many of us have built around our understanding of Him. The gospel is not merely that God forgives us so that we can try harder to become better people—the gospel is that the Father has brought us into the life of the Son, through the Holy Spirit. What does this really mean? In Christ, we are not strangers trying to earn our way into Gods presence, rather, we are beloved children who have been welcomed into the very fellowship of the Triune God. The Father sees us in the Son, loves us with the love He has for His Son, and has given us His Spirit so that we might know—not merely intellectually, but personally—that we belong to Him. This changes everything. Our deepest identity is not found in our failures, our accomplishments, our past, our ministry, our reputation, or even our ability to get our lives together. Our truest identity is found in Christ, for we are the Fathers beloved children because we have been united to the beloved Son by the Holy Spirit. John says: “See what love the Father has given us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are.” - 1 John 3:1 (RSV) And so we are. Not because we performed well enough or because we finally became worthy. It is because the Father, in His extravagant grace, has given us the Son and poured out His Spirit. So the invitation of the gospel is clear: come and receive what God has already given you in Christ. Lay down the striving, the fear, and the endless attempt to prove yourself worthy, and rest in the love of the Father who has already welcomed you in the Son. Let His love define you, let Christ be the foundation of your identity, and let the Holy Spirit awaken you to the reality that you belong to God. This is why the gospel really is offensively good, for it tells us the truth about God, and invites us to live boldly from the truth of who we are in Christ. #jasonclark #thegoodnewsofthegospel #trinitariantheology #globalgraceseminary

Roy Wooten

Professor

Roy Wooten is one of the “real life” football players from the era that the movie Friday Night Lights was based upon, but he is best known for helping thousands of people improve their relationships through humorous, transformational and inspirational retreats, seminars and workshops. He and his wife, Devra are co-authors of “The Secret to Lifetime Love”, “Life Together Forever Marriage Enrichment Curriculum”, and many others. He is also the author of, “Full Throttle Into Fatherhood” for young and expectant fathers.

He has presented on platforms such as the National Head Start Conferences, National Association of Marriage and Relationship Educators, Texas Association of Marriage and Family Therapist, Christian Association for Psychological Studies International, and many more. He is a media guest on the subject of relationships and consults with businesses, chambers, schools, churches and nonprofits to strengthen relationships for success. He and his wife have facilitated more than 175 couples weekends and retreats.
He is the creator of the marriage-saving Life Together Forever Marriage Intensive which has a success rate of 90%. He and Devra have facilitated over 250 intensives in their NW Houston Life Together Forever offices.
He earned his B.S. & M.S. from Abilene Christian University and has carried licenses from Texas Department of Children and Family Services and Texas Board of Examiners of Psychologists. He has over 25 years experience keeping families together and serves as the President of Shield Bearer Counseling Centers (ShieldBearer.org) and a Leader and Author in the mens transformational ministry, The Crucible Project (TheCrucibleProject.org).
Roy and Devra live, worship and minister in NW Houston near their two adult Aggie children and son-in-law.
